Loving pets is where professional pet care begins. It cannot be where the standard ends.
When we began our journey in 2008, professional pet sitting was still unfamiliar to many families. If you needed someone to care for your pets while you traveled, you usually called Grandma, asked a neighbor, traded favors with a friend, or hired the teenager down the street.
Those arrangements were built on trust and existing relationships—and for many families, they worked.
But the role pets play in our lives has changed. The way we care for them has changed, too.
Today, our furkids live beside us as members of the family. They sleep in our beds, appear in family photos, travel with us, visit Grandma for the weekend, and have routines, preferences, medications, specialists, and needs that matter deeply to us. Their care is no longer an afterthought or something handled with whatever time and money happen to be left over. Families plan for it.
Pet care has grown into an enormous industry around that love. Veterinary medicine has advanced. Specialty pet stores and products have multiplied. Dog walking, pet sitting, daycare, boarding, training, grooming, nutrition, technology, and transportation services have expanded in ways few of us could have imagined decades ago.
We are proud to have helped grow professional in-home pet care in our community since 2008. We love this industry. We believe deeply in what it can be.
We also believe it is time to raise the standard.
More choices do not always mean more protection

As spending on pets has grown, so has the number of people and companies hoping to earn a portion of it. Large corporations and investment groups have entered many areas of pet care. Online platforms have made it easy for almost anyone to advertise pet-sitting or dog-walking services as a side gig.
Convenience is not inherently bad. Neither is being an independent sitter. Many individuals care deeply and do excellent work.
The concern is that there is no single, universal standard governing what someone must know before being trusted with a pet, a home, and access to both. A profile, a payment system, reviews, or a basic background screening can help a family find a person—but none of those things, by themselves, create a professional care system.
Professionalism must be built deliberately.
It requires training, written procedures, sound judgment, accountability, communication, documentation, and a plan for what happens when the day does not go according to plan.
Pet care is simple—until suddenly it is not
Most visits are wonderfully ordinary. A dog enjoys a walk and a good sniff. A cat gets a clean litter box, fresh water, dinner, and affection on their own terms. A pawrent receives an update and a photo showing that everything is well.
But professional standards are not designed only for ordinary moments. They are built for the moment a sitter opens a door and smells natural gas.
Or arrives to find water dripping from the ceiling.
Or encounters a large, off-leash dog charging toward the pup in their care.
Or notices that a cat has skipped two meals, has not used the litter box normally, or is straining to urinate.
Or discovers that a key does not work, a door is unlocked, a pet is missing from their usual hiding places, medication has been vomited up, or the home’s temperature has become unsafe.
Love matters in every one of those situations. But love alone does not tell someone how to respond.
Training and procedures do.
What “Raising the Standard” means at Always With Love Pet Care
Our North Star guides every decision we make:
> Every decision we make should increase a pet’s safety, strengthen a client’s trust, and reinforce our standard of care.
That is more than a statement on a wall. It shapes how we hire, train, communicate, document visits, prepare for emergencies, and care for every home and furkid entrusted to us.
We employ a professional care team

Our sitters are employees—not strangers selected at random for individual bookings. They are background-checked, insured, trained, supported, and expected to follow the same company standards.
A team-based model also gives our clients something one person working alone may not be able to provide: backup. Illness, emergencies, car trouble, and severe weather can affect any caregiver. The difference is whether there is already a system and a prepared team in place to keep a furkid’s care from being left to chance.
We use written Field Standard Operating Procedures
Our Field Standard Operating Procedures turn our experience into consistent action. They give our team clear guidance for everyday care as well as urgent and unexpected situations.
They address matters such as:
● Safe entry and exit procedures and door-dash prevention
● Checking equipment before walks and maintaining control around unfamiliar or off-leash dogs
● Monitoring food, water, medication, elimination, mobility, breathing, behavior, and other changes
● Responding to signs of illness, injury, distress, or a missing pet
● Handling home concerns such as leaks, broken windows, unsafe temperatures, unusual odors, or signs of unauthorized entry
● Escalating concerns, contacting the appropriate people, and documenting what happened
● Completing a thorough visit even when something unexpected interrupts the original plan
Procedures do not replace judgment. They give a trained caregiver the foundation to use judgment well.
We train for the details that are easy to miss
Excellent care often lives in small observations.
Did the cat actually eat, or was the food simply moved around the bowl? Was that small pink spot on the mat urine? Is the dog walking differently today? Is a normally social pet hiding? Is the water bowl unusually full? Is the thermostat reading safe? Did the door latch completely behind the sitter?
Our team is trained to pay attention, compare what they see with the pet’s normal routine, document meaningful changes, and speak up. We would rather investigate a concern that turns out to be harmless than ignore an early warning sign that mattered.
We communicate with transparency
Accidents and emergencies can happen even when people are careful. Professionalism is not pretending that nothing will ever go wrong. It is reducing preventable risks, responding appropriately, communicating promptly, taking responsibility, and learning from what occurred.
Our clients deserve honest information about their furkids and homes. They should not have to wonder whether a visit happened, what the sitter observed, or whether an unusual situation was addressed. Our GPS-tracked visit journals, detailed updates, photos, internal communication, and escalation procedures help keep everyone informed.
Trust is not created by saying, “Trust us.” It is created by consistently behaving in a trustworthy way.
We know that the home is part of the care
In-home pet care is about more than food, walks, and litter boxes. When a family travels, we are also entering and monitoring their home.
That means noticing packages and mail, changes in temperature, leaks, storm damage, broken windows, unusual odors, doors that do not appear secure, and other signs of trouble. A pet cannot call a pawrent to say something is wrong. A professional caregiver must be prepared to notice and act.
We keep improving
We have cared for thousands of pets since 2008, including dogs, cats, reptiles, guinea pigs, snakes, tarantulas, seniors, pets receiving chemotherapy, cats with feeding tubes, and furkids with complex medical and mobility needs.
That experience is invaluable—but experience should never become an excuse to stop learning.
We review situations, update procedures, strengthen training, and ask what could make the next visit safer and more consistent. Raising the standard is not a finish line. It is an ongoing commitment.
The questions every pawrent deserves to ask
Whether you choose Always With Love Pet Care or another provider, ask what exists beyond the promises on the website:
● Who will enter my home and care for my furkids?
● Are caregivers employees or independent contractors?
● How are they screened, trained, supervised, and supported?
● What happens if my primary caregiver becomes unavailable?
● Are there written safety and emergency procedures?
● How are visits verified and documented?
● What changes in eating, elimination, behavior, or mobility trigger concern?
● How and when will I be contacted if something goes wrong?
● Is the company insured, and what does that coverage include?
● Who is accountable for the care from beginning to end?
A professional provider should welcome those questions.
Because they are not “just pets”
Families do not hire us simply because a bowl needs to be filled or a leash needs to be clipped on. They hire us because someone they love will remain at home while they are away.
They want to attend the wedding, take the vacation, visit family, work a long day, or handle an emergency without carrying constant worry about what is happening back home.
That peace of mind cannot be built on affection alone. It comes from capable people working within a thoughtful, accountable system—people who understand that the ordinary details matter and that the unexpected must be planned for.
At Always With Love Pet Care, we have spent years helping professional pet care grow. Now we are focused on where it must go next.
Safer care. Stronger communication. Greater accountability. Consistent standards. And all the love our furkids deserve.
That is what it means to be Raising the Standard in Professional Pet Care.
